Dürer in Vienna

Vienna holds Dürer across two institutions. The Kunsthistorisches Museum has major panel paintings including the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand and portraits from his mature period. The Albertina — a few minutes' walk from the KHM — holds one of the great collections of his works on paper: drawings, engravings, and watercolours including the Young Hare and the Large Piece of Turf, two of the most technically accomplished nature studies made in any medium before the modern era.

The Albertina's Dürer holdings were assembled by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen in the late eighteenth century and remain largely intact. Seeing the drawings and watercolours alongside the panel paintings in the KHM makes Vienna the best single city outside Germany for understanding the full scope of his work.

Planning your visit

The KHM and the Albertina are both in the First District, a ten-minute walk apart. Both require booking in advance during peak season. The Albertina's graphic works are shown in rotation — check which Dürer drawings are currently on display before visiting.

Albrecht Dürer

German · Northern Renaissance · 1471–1528

Dürer was the leading figure of the Northern Renaissance and the first artist north of the Alps to fully engage with Italian Renaissance theory and ideals. Born in Nuremberg, he also travelled to Venice and the Netherlands, and was celebrated across Europe as much for his prints and engravings as his paintings.
