Claude Monet in Paris

Monet's Paris

Paris was never where Monet did his best work. He was a painter of gardens, rivers, and coastlines, and spent most of his life outside the city. But the Musée d'Orsay holds the largest concentration of his major canvases anywhere in the world — the full Haystacks series, the Rouen Cathedral sequence, the Poplars paintings — acquired in many cases before he had even finished them.

The Orangerie is the necessary second stop. The eight Grandes Décorations — vast water lily paintings designed for these specific oval rooms — were Monet's final project, completed in the last decade of his life and donated to the French state in the year he died. He worked with the architect on the light source: diffuse, from above, never direct. There is no reproduction of these that comes close to the experience of standing inside them.

Planning your visit

Book the Orangerie for early morning when the light in the oval rooms is at its best. The Orsay is most manageable on a Tuesday or Wednesday when weekend crowds have cleared.

About the artist

Claude Monet

French · Impressionism · 1840–1926

Monet was the leading figure of French Impressionism, a movement he helped found in the 1870s with his commitment to painting light and atmosphere directly from observation. He spent much of his career in Normandy and at his garden in Giverny, where the Water Lilies series — including the vast panels designed for the Orangerie in Paris — occupied the last three decades of his life.
