Caravaggio in Naples

Caravaggio fled to Naples in 1606, three weeks after killing a man in Rome. The city received him, and he produced some of his darkest and most powerful work there. The Seven Works of Mercy at the Pio Monte della Misericordia was painted in a single sustained effort shortly after his arrival — seven acts of charity compressed into one chaotic, nocturnal scene, all the figures jostling in the foreground light.

The Capodimonte Museum holds the Flagellation of Christ, painted during his second Neapolitan stay after his failed attempt to return to Rome. It is a late Caravaggio, the figures emerging from deep shadow, the violence spare and clinical. He died before he could leave Naples for good, intercepted by fever on the road north.

Italian · Baroque · 1571–1610

Caravaggio revolutionised Western painting with his dramatic realism and intense chiaroscuro — figures emerging from deep shadow into a single shaft of light. He worked in Rome until 1606, when he killed a man and fled, spending his final years in Naples, Malta, and Sicily. Around 65 paintings survive.
