Peter Paul Rubens in Madrid
Rubens in Madrid
The Prado holds a large and important Rubens collection assembled through the Habsburg connection — he visited Spain in 1628 on a diplomatic mission and Philip IV became a significant patron. The Three Graces, the Garden of Love, and a series of mythological canvases from his mature period are here, along with copies he made of Titian's works in the royal collection — a record of one great painter studying another. His hunting scenes, painted for the Spanish royal residences, are among the most energetic works in the building.
Seeing Rubens in the Prado alongside Titian and Velázquez — the painters who most directly shaped and were shaped by his influence — makes the relationships legible. He studied Titian in Madrid in 1628; Velázquez studied Rubens at the same moment. The three painters are in conversation across the same set of rooms.
