Pablo Picasso in Madrid
Guernica hangs at the Museo Reina Sofía — a canvas roughly eight metres wide, painted in six weeks in 1937 in response to the Nazi bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War. It is one of the most politically charged paintings in existence and has a specific history: Picasso refused to allow it to return to Spain until democracy was restored, and it was held at the MoMA in New York until 1981, six years after Franco's death. The Reina Sofía displays the preparatory sketches in the same room, showing the stages through which he arrived at the final composition.
The Prado holds a small number of early academic works from Picasso's youth, when he was directly studying the Spanish masters — Velázquez and Goya above all. Seeing these alongside the mature work in the Reina Sofía a few hundred metres away clarifies what he absorbed before he dismantled it.
Planning your visit
The Reina Sofía is a short walk from the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza — the three museums form the 'Golden Triangle of Art' along the Paseo del Prado. Guernica is on the second floor; the room is large but can be crowded. Tuesday to Saturday evenings after 7pm are free and less busy.

The Reina Sofía houses Spain's national collection of 20th and 21st century art, most famously Picasso's Guernica. A former hospital augmented by a striking glass tower extension; one of Europe's finest modern art museums.

About the artist
Spanish · Cubism / Surrealism · 1881–1973
Picasso co-invented Cubism with Georges Braque and went on to dominate 20th-century art across painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. Born in Málaga, he spent most of his adult life in France, where his restless reinvention across styles and movements made him the most influential artist of the modern era.
