Francisco Goya in Madrid
Goya in Madrid
Madrid holds more Goya than anywhere else — the Prado alone has around 140 works, nearly a third of his known output. The Black Paintings are here: fourteen murals painted directly onto the walls of his country house outside the city in the last years of his life, transferred to canvas after his death. Saturn Devouring His Son, the Dog, the Witches' Sabbath — these are among the darkest works in Western painting, made by a man who was deaf, in his seventies, and living alone after the horrors of the Napoleonic occupation he had witnessed and documented in the Disasters of War.
The Third of May 1808 and the Second of May 1808 are also in the Prado — the two companion paintings made six years after the events they depict, showing the popular uprising and the subsequent executions by French forces. Alongside these, the royal portraits and the two Majas show the range of a painter who worked for the court while privately recording everything the court refused to see.
Planning your visit
The Prado is large; give Goya at least two hours. The Black Paintings are on the ground floor. The Third of May and the Disasters prints are in adjacent rooms. The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, a short walk away on Calle de Alcalá, holds further major works including his self-portrait with spectacles — worth combining if time allows.

About the artist
Francisco Goya
Spanish · Romanticism · 1746–1828
Goya was the leading Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and court painter to the Spanish crown. His work spans elegant royal portraits, war scenes of brutal clarity, and the nightmarish Black Paintings — painted on the walls of his home in old age — making him one of the most psychologically complex artists in the Western tradition.
