Caravaggio in Florence

Florence was never Caravaggio's city — he was Roman by formation and temperament — but the Uffizi holds two significant works that reward careful attention. The Sacrifice of Isaac and the Medusa (painted on a ceremonial shield for Cardinal del Monte, who gave it to the Medici) both date from his early Roman years, when his radical naturalism was still fresh enough to be scandalous.

Seeing these early works in Florence, surrounded by the Renaissance painters he was consciously overturning — the idealised forms, the decorous compositions — makes the confrontational quality of his approach more legible. Caravaggio painted the way things looked, not the way they were supposed to look.

About the artist

Caravaggio

Italian · Baroque · 1571–1610

Caravaggio revolutionised Western painting with his dramatic realism and intense chiaroscuro — figures emerging from deep shadow into a single shaft of light. He worked in Rome until 1606, when he killed a man and fled, spending his final years in Naples, Malta, and Sicily. Around 65 paintings survive.
