Johannes Vermeer in Dresden
Vermeer in Dresden
The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden holds three Vermeers, including the Girl Reading a Letter by an Open Window — which in 2021 was revealed, after removal of a later overpaint, to include a large painting of Cupid on the back wall that Vermeer had originally included. The overpainting was done after his death, probably in the eighteenth century. Its removal restored a compositional layer that scholars had speculated about for decades.
Dresden's collection was assembled by Augustus the Strong in the early eighteenth century and reflects his systematic acquisition of the Dutch and Flemish masters. The Vermeer holdings here are smaller than Den Haag but the gallery itself — a long sequence of rooms in a baroque building — is one of the more pleasurable places to look at paintings in Europe.
Planning your visit
The gallery is in the Zwinger complex in the city centre. It is rarely as crowded as major metropolitan museums. The restored Girl Reading a Letter is in the Dutch rooms on the ground floor.

About the artist
Johannes Vermeer
Dutch · Dutch Golden Age · 1632–1675
Vermeer produced fewer than forty paintings in his lifetime, all of them intimate domestic interiors set in Delft, the Dutch city where he was born and died. His work was largely forgotten after his death and only rediscovered in the 19th century — today he is considered one of the supreme painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
