Johannes Vermeer in Den Haag
Vermeer in The Hague
The Mauritshuis in The Hague holds two of the most studied paintings in Western art: Girl with a Pearl Earring and View of Delft. They hang in the same small museum, which means you can see both in the same morning — something that would have been unimaginable for most of the past two centuries when they were in different collections. The museum is compact, housed in a seventeenth-century palace on the Hofvijver, and rarely as crowded as you might expect given what it contains.
View of Delft is the painting Marcel Proust described as the most beautiful painting in the world, and the one that killed the novelist Bergotte in In Search of Lost Time — he dies in front of 'a little patch of yellow wall' he had never noticed before. In person, the topographical precision and the quality of the light are unlike anything in his other work. It is the only landscape he is known to have painted.
Planning your visit
Book online to avoid queues, particularly in summer. The museum is small enough to see everything meaningful in two hours. Combined with a short train to Delft (15 minutes), where Vermeer lived and worked, it makes for a full day.

About the artist
Johannes Vermeer
Dutch · Dutch Golden Age · 1632–1675
Vermeer produced fewer than forty paintings in his lifetime, all of them intimate domestic interiors set in Delft, the Dutch city where he was born and died. His work was largely forgotten after his death and only rediscovered in the 19th century — today he is considered one of the supreme painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
