Van Eyck in Bruges

Bruges was where Van Eyck spent his mature years, employed at the court of Philip the Good of Burgundy. The Groeningemuseum holds the Madonna with Canon van der Paele — painted in 1436, two years before his death — in which the donor is shown kneeling before the Virgin with a physical specificity that was new in Western painting: the wrinkled skin, the reading glasses, the hernia visible through his robe. Every surface in the painting — the brocade, the armour, the Persian carpet — is rendered with a precision that still astonishes.

The Groeningemuseum's collection of Flemish Primitives is one of the strongest in existence, combining Van Eyck with Hans Memling and Hugo van der Goes. The museum is small enough to see in a focused morning, and the quality of what's there makes it one of the more rewarding galleries in northern Europe.

Planning your visit

The Groeningemuseum is in the centre of Bruges, near the Dijver canal. It is rarely crowded except in peak summer. Combined with the Memling Museum in the St John's Hospital (a ten-minute walk), it makes for a complete morning of early Flemish painting.
