Early Renaissance · Italian · 1415–1492
Piero della Francesca's paintings have a cool, geometric serenity that sets them apart from every other Renaissance master. The figures are solid and monumental, the light even and mathematical; in person, his works feel like they were made outside time. The frescoes at Arezzo are among the greatest things painted in the fifteenth century.
