Klimt was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession and one of the defining artists of Art Nouveau, celebrated for paintings that combine oil with gold and silver leaf to extraordinary decorative effect. Almost all of his major works remain in Vienna, where the Belvedere and the Kunsthistorisches Museum hold the largest collections.
