Van Dyck in Antwerp

Antwerp was where Van Dyck was born and where he trained in Rubens's workshop — the most important artistic apprenticeship in seventeenth-century Europe. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp holds several of his major works, and the Cathedral of Our Lady has altarpieces that show him working in the same monumental religious tradition as his teacher before he found his own direction in portraiture.

Seeing Van Dyck in Antwerp alongside Rubens — whose influence is visible in the early work and whose shadow Van Dyck spent his career stepping out from — clarifies how he developed his lighter, more psychologically penetrating approach. The city's guild of St Luke records him as a master painter at nineteen, one of the youngest in its history.

Planning your visit

The KMSKA (Royal Museum) reopened after a major renovation in 2022 and is now one of the best-presented collections of Flemish painting in Europe. The Cathedral of Our Lady requires a small entrance fee for the Rubens and Van Dyck works; it is open most days.
